Primary Function

Battelle’s Environment and Infrastructure (E&I) business unit is seeking a Technical writer/editor to support the research, development, test and evaluation of security systems and technology for both the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration. This is a part-time position and the selected candidate will work in Battelle’s Atlantic City Office located in Egg Harbor Township, NJ.

Major Responsibilities

  • Writes, rewrites, and/or edits documentation, communication and reference materials used for a variety of purposes for research and service departments throughout the organization. Organizes or restructures documents to meet information dissemination goals.; Integrates text and graphic elements to meet document design goals.; Verifies proper use of references, secondary sources, and ancillary materials to ensure compliance with applicable provisions of copyright law.

  • Advises staff in the planning and organizing of information, visual presentations or graphic illustrations.; Provides a high degree of quality assurance by reading documents objectively and closely for structure, coherence, logic, tone, and style and ensuring end products meet customer expectations.

  • Acts in place of potential audience members to ensure that documents achieve their rhetorical and contractual goals.; Ensures that written product communicates information in a clear and appropriate manner.

  • Advises staff on the most cost- and time-effective means to accomplish communications.

  • Oversees the production of publications and provides coordination between the publication production staff and the research or service group.; Ensures a quality product is produced on time and within cost constraints.

Position Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communication or technical field. Requires 5 years of experience as a writer/editor of technical publications.

  • Candidate should have experience working in a Government contract highly dynamic test and evaluation environment.

  • Must have the ability to team with a diverse group of individuals ranging from new college graduates to PhD level. Candidate shall have the ability to maintain, prioritize, and manage deliverable schedule so all reports meet client mandated deadlines and follow Battelle's internal SOPs.

  • This will include interacting with authors and ensuring they are submitting peer reviewed documents in accordance with schedules.

  • Candidate must proofread and edit technical documents and scientific reports, be flexible and quickly adapt when “pop up’ and other high priority client reporting needs cause priorities to change.

  • The ability to adapt to changes in document specifications and to manage a multi-author/multi-reviewer publication cooperatively are also key requirements.

  • Experience working under pressure with deadlines is critical. There are approximately 50 documents ongoing per month with a minimum of 10 documents/month requiring technical editing and formal delivery to the client.

  • Must have excellent grammatical and rhetorical skills and be familiar with a broad range of communication techniques and styles.

  • Expertise in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Adobe is required. Should be capable of creating and maintaining document templates.

  • Knowledge of layout, graphic design, and desktop publishing principles is desirable.

  • MS Access expertise is a plus.

  • US Citizen required with the ability to obtain and maintain Secret Security Clearance, DHS and TSA suitability.
