We seek an Electrical Engineer/ Principal Research Scientist for the Unmanned Systems group within Battelle’s National Security Business Unit. Battelle’s Unmanned Systems business line integrates the breadth of Battelle capabilities to solve a wide range of technical problems that require expertise in rapid-reaction, system integration and characterization, and survivability with particular focus on unmanned applications.

This position located in Columbus, OH.

Battelle’s ability to hire this position is contingent upon the award of a large Government Contract. Award is expected in the May-June 2018 timeframe.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This Electrical Engineer/ Principal Research Scientist position is focused on Battelle’s HeatCoat offering, an anti-icing/deicing system for aircraft (link), and it is contingent upon award of a submitted project proposal. The selected candidate will work in the Unmanned Systems Business Line, which is composed of researchers, engineers, designers, and technicians covering mechanical, materials, electrical, and software capabilities. Unmanned leads and/or support Applied Research and Engineering projects in support of US Government and commercial clients. The candidate will work alongside other Battelle professionals to deliver capabilities in accordance with established cost, schedule, and technical metrics.

The ideal candidate is proactive, eager to learn, and can approach challenging problems analytically and creatively. Although technical competence and critical thinking skills are expected at Battelle, emphasis is placed on technical/non-technical problem solving, effectiveness, and tenacity.

Battelle’s hiring against this requisition is contingent upon the award of a large Government Contract. Award is expected in the May 2018 timeframe.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The candidate will support engineering projects that involve design, analysis, testing, fabrication, and troubleshooting of electronic, electrical, electromechanical, electromagnetic, thermal, fluid, computer, and network components, subsystems, and systems that will be used in airborne applications. Occassional travel will be required. Responsibilities include the following:

  • Mature electrical designs from prototype assemblies to production-ready/deliverable units that meet DoD airworthiness requirements

  • Oversee unit (including CCA) fabrication by third party fabricators

  • Lead a technical team in the detailed design, prototyping, and verification of custom electronics assemblies for aviation applications

  • Apply best practices for electrical designs

  • Implement technical problem solving methods, including risk identification and reduction

  • Generate technical documents, including requirements, specifications, and test plans/reports. Review technical documents, including drawings, for release

  • Conduct laboratory and/or field test and/or experiments

  • Provide routine updates/reportingon tasking progress

THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program with 5-8 of related expereince.

  • Demonstrated ability to mature electrical designs from prototype assemblies to production-ready/deliverable units that meet DoD airworthiness requirements5 years experience leading technical teammates in the planning and executing project activities

  • Experience estimating/forecasting labor to ensure adequate project staffing

  • Ability to interface with various engineering disciplines

  • Experience with environmental test equipment, procedures, and protocols

  • Demonstrated ability to interface with commercial and US government end-users and program offices

  • Demonstrated ability to generate proposals, specifications, plans, procedures, and technical reports

  • Demonstrated ability to critically review technical documentation and provide constructive feedback

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely with technical and non-technical audiences

  • Responsible contributor who proactively follows-up on delegated tasks

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a larger team

  • U.S. Citizen with willingness/ability to possess DoD Secret security clearance

THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION

  • Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program

  • Familiarity with Configuration Control and Configuration Management principles and practices

  • Experience with product development and manufacturing

  • Experience with engineering products to meet ISO 9001 standard

  • Experience with Risk Management tools and processes, including DFMEA and FTA

  • Experience with Root Cause Corrective Analysis (RCCA)

  • Experience with Reliability, Availability, Maintainability (RAM) theory and calculations

  • Experience with engineering analogies and modeling of engineering systems

  • Experience with rapid prototyping equipment and processes

  • Experience with MATLAB and LabVIEW

  • U.S. Citizen with willingness/ability to possess DoD TS/SCI security clearance
